What the Doctor ordered ...

Dr. Dre - Compton (a soundtrack by Dr. Dre)
Straight Outta Compton
*Ron Burgundy voice*

I interrupt Dino Month to bring your attention to Dr. Dre's latest album.

Unfortunately it's not Detox, dubbed "the most advanced rap album ever", which has been in the works since 2001 and now appears to be delayed indefinitely.

I'm talking about Compton. The surprise compilation-style album, inspired by the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, is both a wonderful marketing ploy and a potent celebration of Dre's hometown. Dropped exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music, the hour-long state-of-the-nation address caps off a 30-year rap career while simultaneously drumming up a buzz for NWA's biographical drama chronicling the rise and fall of the hip hop group of Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella.

On his first record in 16 years, the 50-year-old Apple executive, a pioneering producer moreso than a skilled rhymer, surrounded himself with a diverse cast of guest appearances and co-writers to create a startling grand finale.

Also, you might have noticed the #straighoutta meme, which is currently blowing up the internet. You can make your own at StraightOuttaSomewhere.com and be part of the promo circus!

Straight Outta Compton hits theaters August 14.
