The Wolf of Wall Street

the wolf of wall street by martin scorsese

Last Friday I checked out The Wolf of Wall Street. Someway, somehow, my friends thought I would particularly enjoy Martin Scorsese's latest -- I can't even recall how many times this movie was recommended to me -- and so in the end I caved. Apart from the kinetic trailer and a Jordan Belfort interview in Humo, I didn't really know what to expect. And there's no way that I could have.

Young stockbrocker Jordan Belfort (an amazing Leonardo DiCaprio) is just getting his feet wet at Wall Street when Black Friday happens and he loses his job. Desperate for money, Belfort takes a less prestigious gig as a penny stock dealer. Motivated by the remarkable profitability of penny stocks, he soon recruits Donnie Azoff (a brilliant Jonah Hill) and several of his entrepreneurial friends to start his own business. The lot gets richer than gods.

And with their new-found wealth comes drugs. And parties. And of course sex.

Martin Scorsese did such a great job with this movie. It's a fast-paced, drugged-up, and decadent 180-minute rollercoaster ride with classic performances by DiCaprio (has he become the greatest actor of this generation?), Hill, stunning Aussie Margot Robbie, Kyle Chandler, Matthew McConaughy, and a slew of others. The Wolf of Wall Street is grotesque, furious, and outrageous, but more than anything it is grotesquely entertaining, furiously funny, and outrageously ingenious. Seriously, go watch this.
