Facebook buys WhatsApp, improves stranglehold on global communication

The $19 billion valuation stunned Wall Street. Users feared the possibility of ads. The story of co-founder Brian Acton, who had applied at Facebook in 2009 but was turned down, enthused people.

N-VA takes political campaigning online

Political campaigning in Belgium is usually rather straightforward and conservative. Think polarizing slogans, traditional posters, appearances on current affairs shows and quizzes, and public showings-up for good measure. Some politicians (like technie Q and adulterer Leterme) are strong advocates for Twitter, but other than that, very few political figures or parties have so far embraced online media.

marina by stijn coninx

Last week I saw Marina by Daens director Stijn Coninx. I knew very little of Rocco Granata, upon whose life the movie is based, except for his hit song Marina, but somehow, the delicate trailer really spoke to me. I was also very curious how Safety First actor Matteo Simoni (the No. 2 hottest Matteo in Flanders, behind Yours Truly, thank you very much) would fare in a serious role.

"When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man"

a clockwork orange by anthony burgess

A Clockwork Orange is one of those modern classics that is so widely referenced and alluded to -- The Simpsons, for example, seem particularly fond of it, just check here, here, and here -- that I often felt ashamed for not having read it yet. No more! Last week I finally checked out the nightmarish 1962 novel by English writer and composer Anthony Burgess. It is ranked No. 49 on this list by the Racliffe Publishing Course and was famously adapted into a controversial movie by Stanley Kubrick in 1971.

Gangster Squad

gangster squad by ruben fleischer

I recently saw Gangster Squad, a 2013 action crime flick by former creative copywriter and Zombieland maker Ruben Fleischer. It's weird that this movie somehow slipped through my fingers because I A) love funky gangster movies, B) idolize pretty boy Ryan Gosling, and C) can definitely appreciate myself a little Emma Stone. So yeah, it was long overdue that I checked out Gangster Squad.

The Wolf of Wall Street

the wolf of wall street by martin scorsese

Last Friday I checked out The Wolf of Wall Street. Someway, somehow, my friends thought I would particularly enjoy Martin Scorsese's latest -- I can't even recall how many times this movie was recommended to me -- and so in the end I caved. Apart from the kinetic trailer and a Jordan Belfort interview in Humo, I didn't really know what to expect. And there's no way that I could have.

"The Devil got in the car with him and sat shotgun"

A California Childhood by James Franco

I recently read A California Childhood by perpetual squinter and all-around nice guy James Franco. Until his good-natured Comedy Central Roast last year, I only knew him as an actor in Spider-Man, Pineapple Express127 Hours, and Spring Breakers, among others, and of course this awesome Justin Bieber parody. During the roast, Franco was often confronted for his books and art, which I knew nothing about, so I decided to check out his work.
