NBA 2K14 is out now

2K Sports releases NBA 2K14 featuring LeBron James

One of the perks of interning at PR firm Global Image is that client Take-Two Interactive at regular intervals sends samples of new games. As an avid NBA and NBA 2K fan, I was excited when the NBA 2K14 press samples arrived -- even more so because there was a spare copy that I was allowed to test. Of course I reluctantly accepted the opportunity. Sacrifices need to be made.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The NBA 2K franchise is synonymous with the most advanced sports games out there, and deservedly so. Year after year, the developers up the ante by adding new features and improving the gameplay. I probably need not remind you of the revolutionary Jordan Challenge (NBA 2K11) or the epic Legends tournament (NBA 2K12). NBA 2K14 adds the (largely predetermined) Path To Greatness mode, featuring four-time NBA MVP LeBron James, but other than that, 2K14 is mainly a polished-up version of last year's installment.

The gameplay, a gamer's should-be greatest area of concern, was drastically updated and improved. The right thumbstick, previously meant for jump shots, lay-ups and dunks, is now also tied to dribbling. It will take some time for the NBA 2K out diehards out there to get refamiliarized with the controls, but I have to admit: the pro stick controls allow more creativity and flash ballhandling-wise, passing-wise and scoring-wise. The commentary, as always, is impressively reflective and on point.

NBA 2K14 is not a slam dunk like earlier installments, but it is still the best sports game on the market. Ball up!
