In a music industry that is becoming consumed by the
digital revolution, with traditional record companies struggling to come up
with viable business models, rap mogul Jay-Z might just have found the holy
grail of profitmaking.
On June 16, during halftime of Game 5 of the NBA
Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat, which roughly 15.8 million people were watching, Jay-Z and Samsung aired a three-minute commercial
announcing his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail.
The promo shows Jay-Z in the studio with hip hop hitmakers Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and Pharrell Williams. "The Internet is like the Wild West," Jay-Z states, "We need to write the new rules."

Magna Carta Holy Grail will be released on July 7, but Samsung has reportedly already purchased 1 million copies, and will make them available to Samsung smartphone users on July 4 via the Magna Carta App. The app will be released on June 24 and the first million people who download it, get the album for free, as well as an "unprecedented look into the album, personal stories and inspiration."
